Just in time for the holiday season, Bastion Technologies, Inc. delivered the Lunar Habitat Mockup to the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Engineering Directorate. JSC plans to use the mockup to evaluate candidate wireless technologies for both the International Space Station (ISS) and the Constellation habitat modules. Although a lunar human presence seems a distant goal, the arrival of the habitat mockup puts NASA one step closer to reality.
Bastion was awarded the Lunar Habitat Mockup contract in September. By October, the human-rated, electrically conductive habitat, began taking shape. Bastion used a local fabrication and manufacturing facility to stage the mockup while Bastion personnel installed the interior components, including reconfigurable wall mounting and equipment systems, raised flooring, entry and exit points, apertures, ventilation systems, lighting systems, and electrical power. The structural design and drawings, as well as the structural analysis were performed in Bastion's corporate office on El Camino Real.
Overseeing the project from concept to delivery was Bastion's program manager, Joe Reeves. The structural design was performed by George Fabela and the structural analysis was performed by Sandip Sudrik. Terry McMartin was responsible for ensuring that the installation of the interior components met all requirements, including federal safety regulations. The team worked closely with welders, paint crews, and other vendors to ensure that the habitat mockup was delivered on schedule and within budget.
Watching the progress of a space habitat mockup being constructed is a fascinating experience. From the initial design concepts and drawings to placing the NASA logo on the exterior panels, each step required careful planning, review, and execution. The New Year brings exciting possibilities for new lunar mockup additions and further exploration opportunities.
