Under the Bioastronautics Contract Bastion engineers support design reviews from preliminary design through flight. For example, engineers provided for the design, operation, integration and maintenance of the Human Research Facility (HRF) science payloads and experimental projects for the HRF1 and HRF2 racks. HRF provides an on-orbit laboratory that enables life science researchers to study and evaluate the physiological, behavioral, and chemical changes in humans induced by spaceflight. The racks provide services and utilities to both experiments and instruments, including electrical power, command and data handling, cooling air and water, pressurized gases and vacuum. The Bastion engineering team provided HRF1 and HRF 2 structural and mechanical reviews and design of hardware, rack input impedance (opposition of electrical power flow), rack video capability, and thermal and vacuum system design. Our analysts provided stress analysis and finite element analysis and developed dynamic testing and model correlation in support of the development of both HRF1 and HRF2. |
